Title :Muallim District Boost Growth
Hits :11
Notes :TANJUNG MALIM: The creation of Muallim district, which was previously part of Batang Padang district, will spur development in the area, with its own administration centre in Slim River town, near here. The 11th district, with a total area of 93,435ha, consists of the mukim (small district) of Slim, Hulu Bernam Barat and Hulu Bernam Timur. Before the creation of the newest district, Batang Padang was administered by two local councils - the Tapah District Council, based in Tapah, and the Tanjung Malim District Council, based here. Its first district officer, Nor Sham Rahman, 44, said Muallim was special as it housed Tanjung Malim and Slim River towns, as well as educational institutions, namely Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Politkenik Sultan Azlan Shah, Institut Tanah dan Ukur Negara and Slim River Vocational College. The district was home to Proton City and the proposed 1Malaysia Youth City, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Ipoh last year. "Tanjung Malim, Slim River and Tapah are known for their warriors. These areas were populated by the descendants of the people of Bugis, Rawa, Kampar and Batak," she said after Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah proclaimed Muallim as the 11th district in Perak here yesterday. She said based on its history, Tanjung Malim got its name when Sabak Bernam chief Raja Itam and a British resident's representative reached Kampung Tanjung Jambu in Tanjung Malim in 1879. "The English nobleman was impressed with the locals, who lived in harmony and were pious. "Therefore, he proposed the area be renamed Tanjung Muallim, which means the place for pious people and dissemination of knowledge," she said. After many years, Tanjung Muallim became Tanjung Malim, and the name remained until today. She said Tanjung Malim retained its status as the leading town for Malay intellectuals and scholars when the 28th ruler of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul-'Azam Shah, established the Sultan Idris Training College in 1922. On her plans for the district, Nor Sham said she would focus on projects that would improve the quality of life in the area. "I will also focus on providing affordable houses for locals and those who plan to make Muallim their home." ( END ) Source : New Straits Times
